The OWSST program conducts siren testing
every Saturday at 12 noon (weather permitting) via a local net on the W4BS
146.82 repeater.
Over the past 4 years of tests, this
program has had much success in identifying sirens throughout the Shelby
County area that were not functioning properly. Since the beginning
of this program, the operational rate of sirens has increased from 54%
to approximately 89%. However, there are still more that need to be tested.
Observation of sites is accomplished by volunteer amateur radio operators from Memphis and the surrounding area, actually traveling to the sites and observing the operational quality of the siren at a given location. The results of the test are then reported back to the net control station from each volunteer. This information is relayed to the EMA officials so that sirens in need of service can be repaired, making sure that they will be functional when they are needed most.....to save lives!
Below you will find a list of all sites including the site number, map page, location name and the address. Please choose a site that you can observe on the upcoming Saturday and then click on the site name to email your chosen site information to Bobby, KG4CMA who is the Program Coordinator. The site name you have chosen will automatically be placed in the subject line for the convenience in coordinating each week's activity. He will also confirm your choice via email and provide you with the needed information from the site to be observed.
Please DO NOT go out to a site without first contacting Bobby, as it helps prevent site duplication, and any potential questions asked by law enforcement officials regarding your presents at a particular site.
We thank you in advance for your assistance
in this program and ask that you bookmark this page and check it regularly
for updates on new siren sites.
In the event that the weather is
good but there is no amateur radio net on any given Saturday, you may go
to this site, http://www.memphisema.com/EMA_Site_2/Siren_Locatiox.html,
and email your report to the Memphis/Shelby County EMA. Please send a copy
of your report to Bobby, kg4cma@peoplepc.com,
so he will know which site you have tested.
