2011 Training Class Information

All Delta Club sponsored training classes are FREE to anyone interested in obtaining an amateur radio license.  The only expense incurred by the students is for whatever books, tapes or other training materials that will be used for the respective class and any fees required for the testing session.  None of these moneys go to the Delta Club.

Caution: The General Class license question pool changed July 1, 2011.  Be sure to purchase the correct license manual for the General license classes - "The ARRL General Class License Manual, 7th Edition"- item #8119.

Scheduled Classes

Technician Class 2-12  -  January 14 & 21, 2012


The next Technician Class is in conjunction with the Tennessee State Guard. The class will be on two Saturdays, January 14th and 21st from 8am to 5pm with FCC testing at the end of the last day. It is scheduled to be taught in Millington.  Joe Lowenthal WA4OVO and Pat Lane W4OQG will provide instruction for the classes.  The text will be The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, Second Edition, ARRL order # 0977 (ISBN: 978-0-87259-097-7).

Extra Class 1-12 - January 14th - February 25, 2012


The next Extra Class 1-12 will be given on six Saturdays from 9am to 1pm from January 14th thru February 25th.  The text will be The ARRL Extra Class LIcense Manual, Seventh Edition, ARRL order # 8874 (ISBN: 978-0-87259-887-4).  Dean Honadle N2LAZ, Alan Proffitt AE5RX, Pat Lane W4OQG and Joe Lowenthal WA4OVO will provide instruction for the classes.  A scientific calculator that includes rectangular to polar and polar to rectangular coordinates is needed for the class.  The suggested calculator is a Casio fx-260 solar.  The calculator has been available at Walmart for under $10.

Future Classes

Technician License Class

No Morse Code Requirement for any Amateur Radio License.  Get your name on the list for the next class NOW by sending an email to Joe Lowenthal, WA4OVO at wa4ovo@arrl.net or just click this link .  Most of the technician classes are held one night a week on Monday nights for 5 or 6 weeks.  We have also had several 2 day (16 hours total) weekday classes, usually held on a Tuesday and Wednesday, or a weekend. 

To help prepare for the Technician License classes, you can obtain a copy of "The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual" (brick-red colored cover), an ARRL publication (item #0977/ISBN 978-0-87259-097-7). You can buy the manual directly from the ARRL  at http://www.arrl.org/shop/Licensing-Education-and-Training/, or possibly at Amazon.com.  You can purchase the manual locally at Barnes & Noble Booksellers.  The retail price is $29.95 that includes practice exam software on a CD.  The manual is a good reference guide for future use.  As stated at the top of the page, the Delta Club does not charge any fee for the class, but we highly recommend that you purchase the manual and there will be a $15 fee for the ARRL FCC examination at the end of the class.

General License Class

For those Technician licensees that are interested in upgrading to a General Class license, Delta Club is planning a General training class in the near future.  If you have let "the code" keep you from advancing to General, now's the time for you to upgrade.  The text used is "The ARRL General Class License Manual," item # 8119 (ISBN 978-0-87259-811). Basic Electronics Class

Amateur Extra License Class

Completed Classes

Basic Electronics 5-11 - September 24 - October 29, 2011

Basic Electronics Class 5-11 began with 12 stutents on September 24th for six Saturdays going until October 29th from 9am to 1pm at the Memphis-Shelby County Health Department East Complex, 1075 Mullins Station Road. Nine students completed the class. The instructors were Dean Honadle N2LAZ and Alan Proffitt AE5RX. Dean introduced the class to his incredible style of math made easy with the use of the scientific calculator. Alan led the next three classes covering DC, AC and power. Then Dean wrapped up the class with components, semiconductors and transistors. For the last class Dean conducted project demonstrations by building a half-wave rectifier, transistor amplifier, voltage doubler and an op amp. Thanks go to Dean and Alan for giving their time for the classes.

Technician Class 4-11 - July 11 - August 15, 2011

Tech class 4-11 began on July 11th for six Monday nights from 6:15 to 9:30pm and ran through August 15th at the Memphis-Shelby County Health Department East Complex at 1075 Mullins Station Rd across from the Penal Farm.  Twenty-three students attended the first session with seventeen completing the course.  The sixth class on August 15th was a new segment on the terminology of VHF/UHF radio and repeater operations and a hands-on session of how to program the Wouxun radio.

Technician Class 3-10 Revisited

Technician Class 3-11 - April 15, 16 & 17, 2011


A technician class was held on April 15th, 16th and 17th at the DeSoto County Emergency Operations Center, 830  Old Hwy 51 N in Nesbit, MS.  The Friday night class ran from 6-10pm; the Saturday class from 8am-5pm and the Sunday class from 1-6pm.  The class was sponsored by the Chickasaw Amateur Radio Association (CARA) in conjunction with the Delta Club training program.

Technician/General Class 2-11 - March 4-5, 18-19, 25-26, 2011


The remedial Technician class portion of General class 2-11 was held on Friday and Saturday, March 4th and 5th at the Mid-South Chapter, American Red Cross, 1400 Central Ave.  Four students started without a license. Congratulations to Christy Bradley KF5JXH, James Trainer KK4AVW, Matt McDaniel KK4AVY and Rollie Williams KK4AVZ who tested and earned their Technician licenses.

General Class 2-11 continued on two Friday nights, March 18th and 25th and two Saturdays, March 19th and 26th at the Memphis-Shelby County Health Department East Complex at 1075 Mullins Station Rd.  The instructors were Joe Lowenthal WA4OVO for general information, Pat Lane W4OQG for the antennas and feedlines and Alan Profitt AE5RX for the electronics.  The Delta Club VE team of Bill Stevens WC9S, Jeff Krause AJ4GY, Alan Profitt AE5RX and Joe Lowenthal WA4OVO provided the the FCC testing session on the afternoon of the 26th.

Extra Class 1-11 January 15-February 19, 2011

Extra Class 1-11 began on January 15th with seven students for six Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm at the Memphis-Shelby County East Complex.  Joe Lowenthal WA4OVO opened the first class with introduction and continued with operating practices, and rules and regulations.  Dean Honadle, N2LAZ ended the first day with Extra Class math, the metric system and how to use the calculator.  Dean continued leading the class for the next two weeks with additional math and calculator examples, electronic principles, components and electronic circuits.  Alan Profitt AE5RX took over instruction the next week with radio signals and requirements, and radio modes and equipment.

Pat Lane W4OQG gave the next class on antennas and feed lines while Alan Profitt finished with  radio propagation and safety.

On the last day of class Delta Club's VE Team of Bill Stevens WC9S, Jeff Krause AJ4GY, Ray Wilson W4VRL and Joe Lowenthal WA4OVO provided the opportunity for the class to take the FCC Extra Class exam.  Congratulations to Al Freeman KD4TJM, Dustin Maki KD0HBJ and Calvin Oliphant KJ4SJS who were successful in passing their exam.  They can immediately add a /AE to their callsign.  Congratulations to Don Gilmore who upgraded to Extra at a later test session.

Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge Class - January 22, 2011


A radio merit badge class was held on January 22, 2011 as a part of Troop 457's Merit Badge College for the Chickasaw Council at St. Benedict Auburndale School.  The two scouts in the class completed their merit badge requirements.  Aaron Alexander KI4OTH was on the 146.82 repeater for the 10 minute QSOs with both scouts.  One of the students was from Topeka, KS.  He is an Eagle Scout trying to earn all 120+ merit badges.  Thanks go not only to Aaron but also Hugh Wardlaw WB4SLI and Rick Tillman WA4NVM for their help in conducting the class.
